On 26 October 2023, the “Crossing Boundaries – Sharifah Zuriah Aljeffri: Her Art and Life” exhibition was opened by YTM Tunku Temenggong Kedah Dato’ Seri DiRaja Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Almarhum Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM.
The exhibition showcased the artistic creations of 85-year-old artist Sharifah Zuriah, encompassing a diverse range of forms, including Arabic calligraphy, Chinese ink painting, charcoal and more. The exhibition also highlighted her significant contributions to humanitarianism, peace advocacy and interfaith dialogues, spanning four and a half decades.
Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz described the exhibition as a source of immense inspiration, not only for its celebration of the extraordinary artistic journey of the artist from Kedah, but also for its embodiment of art’s capacity as a tool for empowerment and change. She further elaborated that art is capable of uplifting communities, amplifying unheard voices and forging pathways towards harmony and lasting peace.
Sharifah Zuriah shared in her speech that she begins her paintings with a prayer that “we need compassion in our hearts, peace in our relationships and justice in our actions in order for us to live in harmonious coexistence.” She revealed that she is drawn to painting lotuses, which symbolise peace and purity.
In his welcoming remarks, SGM president Michael Kok said that Sharifah Zuriah – as an artist who has championed human rights, advocated for environmental preservation and addressed pressing social concerns – has proven that art is more than mere expression; it is a catalyst for change, a beacon of hope and a path to peace.
Two poems by Usman Awang and Daisaku Ikeda were recited at the opening ceremony.
In conjunction with the exhibition, SGM also collaborated with the National Visual Arts Development Board to publish an art catalogue featuring important images and documents that highlight the artist’s unwavering dedication to advancing art and peace.
The exhibition was held from 7 October–5 November 2023, attracting over 1,700 visitors.
