On April 30 and May 2, 2019, under the lead of their teachers, a total of 123 Tadika Seri Soka (TSS) five-year-old children visited the Fireflies Organic Farm located at Broga, Semenyih, Selangor. This activity was held in conjunction with their theme of the semester which was “Food.”
Upon arriving, the children were given a brief introduction of organic farming before being divided into two groups for more focused learning. They fed vegetables to farm animals such as ducks and rabbits and learnt how to make organic fertiliser with animal faeces.
The children also engaged in planting seeds in the soil and transferring seedlings to the ground. They even handled earthworms, which are one of the “best friends” of organic farmers. They also harvested water spinach which could be brought home. After all the hard work, they were served lunch cooked with organic ingredients.
Some of the children were initially hesitant to participate in the activities, but after seeing their classmates enjoying themselves, they joined in too. Though the weather was hot and the children were sweating, the activity provided a rich experience beyond TSS’ grounds and taught them how to appreciate food even more.
It was a truly memorable experience for the children.
