(Oct 2, Putrajaya) In conjunction with Malaysia’s ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) on September 30, Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) was invited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to hold the anti-nuclear exhibition, titled “Everything You Treasure— For a World Free from Nuclear Weapons.”
The exhibition was held at Wisma Putra from September 28 to October 2. Over the past few days, some 200 people had viewed the exhibition, including top officials of the Ministry, Her Highness Tunku Syafinaz Intan, the National Chairperson of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society; Dato’ Dr. Ronald McCoy, Former President of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), ambassadors, former Malaysian diplomats, representative of civil society organisations and students from SMK Putrajaya Presint 5 (1).
At the signing ceremony of the instrument of ratification of the TPNW, Foreign Minister of Malaysia, YB Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin Hussein described Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) as one of several “invaluable partners” within Malaysia who have supported the government’s efforts towards ratifying this treaty.
SGM General Director, Mr. Koh Sia Feai stated that, “SGM has always upheld a strong and unwavering position against nuclear weapons. This is a new beginning of our long journey towards the total elimination of nuclear weapons, and we will continue our efforts in promoting disarmament education through anti-nuclear exhibitions, peace talks, seminars and the Rakan TPNW social media platforms. It is also crucial that we continue to work together with others who share the same goals.”
SGM congratulated Malaysia and applauded its great move in ratifying the nuclear ban treaty, making Malaysia the 46th country in the world to become a State Party to the treaty. Four more ratifications are needed before the Treaty enters into force globally.
The Executive Director of International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) Beatrice Fihn also sent a video message congratulating Malaysians and lauding the government’s consistent efforts in working towards abolishing nuclear weapons.
