On 29 September, psychiatrist Dr Lai Mee Huong delivered a talk on teenagers’ mental health at the SGM Sarawak Culture Centre, attracting an audience of 105 participants.
During her presentation, Dr Lai highlighted the issues of school bullying and emotional abuse, and underscored the crucial role parents play in their teenage children’s mental and emotional development.
She advised parents to first soothe their children’s emotions and listen attentively when they open up, as this helps foster a supportive environment that empowers teens to navigate their challenges.
In more complex situations, Dr Lai advised parents and guardians to consider seeking professional psychological counselling. She emphasised that such measures require time and consistent follow-up for effectiveness.
