“Odyssey – A Lifelong Journey through Art” exhibition ran from 15 September to 13 October at the SGM Penang Culture Centre, drawing 1,485 visitors. The exhibition featured 168 artworks, including 98 lotus-themed pieces, by the 92-year-old artist from Penang.
The opening ceremony on 15 September was officiated by Penang exco member YB Wong Hon Wai, on behalf of the Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow. YB Wong noted that Dato’ Tan’s lifelong passion for art, into which he pours his heart and soul, has contributed to the artist’s remarkable longevity.
SGM General Director Koh Sia Feai praised Dato’ Tan’s commitment to art and expressed gratitude for his donation to the Soka education fund, highlighting it as a testament to his dedication to education.
At the opening ceremony, the exhibition catalogue A Lifelong Journey through Art was also launched by YB Wong, along with other honoured guests.
Tan Chiang Kiong, recognised as Malaysia’s longest-serving art educator, has dedicated six decades of his life to the field. After graduating from the National Taiwan Normal University, he served at Chung Ling Private High School until his retirement last year.
One of Dato’ Tan’s former students Prof Cheng Haw Chien – who is now a visiting professor at Renmin University of China and the lifelong adviser of Ningbo Art Museum in China – shared in an interview that his teacher’s creative vitality has been a lasting inspiration. Prof Cheng also commended SGM’s efforts in promoting culture and art, noting that these initiatives have greatly contributed to the public’s appreciation of art.
