On 5 October, SGM Justice Group conducted an online legal talk titled “The Guide to Consumer Rights and Understanding Hire Purchase,” attracting 260 participants.
Attorney Cynthia Loo provided an overview of the tribunal for consumer claims, detailing its objectives, jurisdiction, jurisdictional limitations and the process for filing a claim. She clarified that the term consumer applies exclusively to individuals purchasing goods or services for personal use, not for business purposes.
Later, attorney Cedric Chan discussed hire purchase agreements, focusing on vehicle loans. He explained that a notice of intent to repossess will be issued if instalments are overdue by two months. He advised participants to stay current with loan payments and, if facing difficulties, to consult the bank for solutions.
During the question-and-answer session, both attorneys addressed issues on bankruptcy, scams and repossession without prior notice, among other topics.
The session was moderated by attorney Yue Weng Khai.
