On 27 August 2022, SGM organised an online legal talk titled “The Internet – Convenient, yet Risky” for over 1,500 people. The talk was given by SGM Justice Group members and lawyers Nelson Tan Zhi Ying and Abby Phang and moderated by Wang Zhen Yuan.
The speakers mentioned some of the scam cases such as online lottery scam, investment scam, online dating scam, fraud representatives from Lembaga Hasil dalam Negeri Malaysia (LHDN) and online shopping scam. They analysed these cases, revealed the means of fraud used and educated the audience on how to see through them.
The speakers also delineated the steps and preventive measures to take if we have fallen victim to fraud.
Besides that, the speakers also spoke about cyberbullying cases and the violation of laws by cyber scammers.
In conclusion, the speakers advised the audience on ways of staying safe online and not to click on unknown links. It is also helpful to discuss with family or friends first when coming across anything suspicious. They urged the audience to learn more about the risks involved and the precautions to take so as to surf the internet safely.
