The SGM Doctors Division was formed by SGI President Daisaku Ikeda on November 27, 2000 during his second visit to Malaysia. On May 3, 2008, he named the division “Beacon.” Two months later, he expressed his wish that the “Beacon Group” would become a source of light, giving courage to all.
The Beacon Group training courses over the years have been opened to not only medical doctors and dentists, but also other healthcare professionals in SGM. These courses aim to nurture the faith and sense of mission of all participants.
On September 23, 55 doctors, dentists, traditional medicine physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other health care professionals, including students, attended a Beacon Group training course at the SGM Culture Centre, Cheras under the theme “Let’s Strive to Become the Role Model of the Oneness of Mentor and Disciple.”
The training course was held to enable the members to strengthen their faith and refresh their vow for kosen-rufu together with our mentor President Ikeda. The members kicked off the training course by singing the well-beloved song, The Great Hero Kusunoki (Dainanko), which is regarded in SGI as exemplifying the bond of mentor and disciple.
In his keynote address, SGM General Director Koh Sia Feai elaborated on the spirit of the oneness of mentor and disciple, emphasising that this is the ultimate path to absolute happiness and victory. It is also the essence of Nichiren Buddhism and the cause of the existence of SGI. He went on to urge the members to wholeheartedly seek our mentor by avidly studying his writings and connecting with him. Mr Koh also urged them to take action to establish their prime point of faith and thoroughly transform their own lives.

Following that, SGM Young Men Division Vice-Leader Dr Siow Yoon Kee shared his impressions of attending the recent SGI youth training course held in September in Japan. Basing his sharing on a question-and-answer session chaired by Soka Gakkai president Minoru Harada, he touched on the expansion of SGM’s membership and the importance of advancing no matter what. He urged the members present to fight alongside our mentor without losing any more time.
Also on hand to offer guidance was SGM Vice-General Director Johnny Ng Teck Sim who shared his personal experience and the difficulties he faced when striving to protect SGM Selangor members at the time of the priesthood issue. Various SGM leaders including SGM Women Division Leader May Chan Oi Mooi and SGM Young Women Division Leader Ng Lay Kian were also present to offer encouragement.
Members also divided themselves into smaller groups to share their impressions on The New Human Revolution.
SGM Vice-General Director and Beacon Group Leader Dr Christopher Boey Chiong Meng encouraged the participants to strive together in unity as humble and trustworthy healthcare professionals, embodying the spirit of bodhisattvas who illuminate the lives of their patients and others with hope and courage. Together, with fresh determination, he studied with the participants President Ikeda’s guidance for the Doctors Division in Japan in September 1996:
- Become “Lions Fighting for Justice” – Face all obstacles courageously, defeating all evil forces and schemes,
- Become the “‘Standard Bearers of a Health Revolution to Protect Life Which is So Infinitely Precious” – Treasure all our fellow Soka Gakkai members and respect all our comrades, and
- Become a “Beacon of Trust in Society” – Respond to the trust people place in us, giving hope and joy to everyone we encounter.
