The dream of a world free from nuclear weapons is one shared by all people, even our future successors. To promote nuclear disarmament, the SGM junior division (JD) held an online peace talk titled “Journey to Banning the Nukes” on September 19. The hosts were JD members Raeka Leong Jen-Wynn, Ng Shi Zen, Ten E Zen, Khoo Kai Le, Ethan Cheng and Looi Jeannie. This is the first time the JD has embarked on such an activity.

Shi Zen kicked off the talk by introducing the hibakushas, or the survivors of the 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, while E Zen talked about Sadako Sasaki, a hibakusha, and her story of folding paper cranes in order to recover from her illness caused by exposure to the atom bomb. Though Sadako died young, her efforts inspired many others to work for peace.
Next, Kai Le shared about Little Boy and Fat Man, the two atomic bombs used during World War II. Ethan then discussed the threat nuclear weapons bring to our world.
Lastly, Jeannie talked about the prime point of the Soka Gakkai’s peace movement and further discussed the key point in creating peace, which is to change the way we think and act.
Through this peace talk, our small yet powerful peace ambassadors expressed their wishes for a world without nuclear weapons and urged the viewers to start being at peace with themselves.
