On 17 May, the art catalogue A Retrospective: Chew Teng Beng – Life, Art and Writings was launched at the National Art Gallery. Edited by curator Tan Sei Hon and published by SGM, the catalogue celebrates Dr Chew Teng Beng’s artistic career and his papermaking legacy spanning seven decades.
SGM president Michael Kok delivered an opening speech, highlighting Dr Chew’s unwavering passion for art and his ground-breaking research on the legacy of papermaking, which has left a lasting impression in both the art and academic realms.
The launch was graced by the Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, HE Danielle Heinecke, who commended Dr Chew for strengthening the ties between Malaysia and Australia through art-related activities. Dr Chew also gave a gratitude speech.
In an interview, lecturer of Malaysian Institute of Arts Elizabeth Low and artist Juhari Said both opined that the publication will serve as an aspiring reference for future younger generations.
The publication, supported by National Visual Arts Development Board and the Australian High Commission, showcases Dr Chew’s artworks and details his art journey from 1950s to 2020s.
