On 20 October, in conjunction with the opening of “The Lotus Sutra – A Message of Peace and Harmonious Coexistence,” a forum was held at the SGI Asia Culture and Education Centre (SGI ACEC). Research fellows from the Institute of Oriental Philosophy (IOP) Eiichi Tsutaki and Dr Takako Kajikawa presented their insights on “The Lotus Sutra Exhibition and Islamic Culture” and “Buddhism and Women” respectively.

In discussing the shared values between the Lotus Sutra and Islamic culture, Mr Tsutaki pointed out that President Ikeda has articulated that both Buddhism and Islam are rooted in the noble spirit of alleviating suffering and saving people. He also emphasised President Ikeda’s advocacy for dialogue among civilisations and religions, noting that such dialogue fosters understanding and cooperation, bridging differences in ethnicity, culture and religion.

Regarding equality, Mr Tsutaki highlighted that the Lotus Sutra teaches that all living beings can attain Buddhahood equally, a concept that resonates with the Islamic principle of equality among all people. This shared belief promotes harmonious coexistence within society.

Meanwhile, Dr Kajikawa shared on the historical evolution of Buddhism’s attitudes towards women. She examined the challenges and restrictions faced by women throughout history, particularly after the passing of Shakyamuni Buddha, when discriminatory views began to take root.

Dr Kajikawa also shared the story of the dragon girl attaining Buddhahood in the Lotus Sutra, a pivotal symbol of breaking gender boundaries that illustrates women’s potential to achieve Buddhahood. She added that Nichiren Buddhism, which forms the basis of the Soka Gakkai, refuted the traditional Buddhist view on women and insisted on the equality of men and women in the path to salvation.

The audience gave positive feedback on the forum, finding it thought-provoking. Through the forum, the principles of peace and harmonious coexistence advocated by the Lotus Sutra continue to offer valuable wisdom for contemporary society.
