In celebration of the International Day of Peace on 21 September, SGM Selangor collaborated with the Interfaith Spiritual Fellowship (INSaF), an initiative of the Pure Life Society (PLS), to host peace-focused activities at the SGM Selangor Culture Centre. The event featured an interfaith discussion on “Youth, Peace and Sustainability,” along with various culture performances. Cofounder of the URI Global Youth Cooperation Circle Dr Sharon Danisha Vaswani delivered the keynote address, underscoring empathy, leadership, and resilience as essential traits for youth in fostering peace and sustainability.
Later, youths from SGM Selangor exchanged ideas with some 100 youths of diverse faith backgrounds, including Islamic, Hindu, Christian and Baháʼí communities from Malaysia, the Philippines and Myanmar. Discussion topics included conflict avoidance, qualities of peace leadership and strategies for sustaining peace. Through these exchanges, the youths gained new insights and strengthened their commitment to unity in building a peaceful world.
Before the culture performances commenced, PLS president Datuk Dr Ambiga Sreenevasan highlighted the importance of collective action and solidarity to address global challenges. SGM president Johnny Ng expressed hope that such an interfaith event would deepen friendships and help bridge differences. Meanwhile, Deputy National Unity Minister YB Saraswathy Kandasami, representing the Minister YB Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, urged participants to foster mutual respect and embrace diversity.
The programme featured diverse cultural performances, including a Dunhuang dance by SGM Selangor, an instrumental piece by the Christian community, a choir from the Islamic community, a traditional dance by the Hindu community, a musical by the Baháʼí community and a children’s choir from Youth Empowerment Support (YES), an organisation supporting refugees.
The event concluded with performers and audience joining in to sing “We Are the World,” celebrating unity across diverse backgroundsand embodying the spirit of a shared humanity.
