On 14 and 15 December 2024, Dunhuang Academy research and exhibition centre deputy director and researcher Wang Huihui delivered two inspiring lectures in conjunction with the Lotus Sutra Exhibition held at the SGI Asia Culture and Education Centre (ACEC) in Johor Bahru.

On the 14th, her lecture titled “Lotus Sutra Artefacts and Their Relevance Today” explored the rich cultural heritage of Dunhuang in China, particularly focusing on the Dunhuang Mogao Caves and the invaluable paintings and scriptures found there, which embody the profound teachings of the Lotus Sutra.

She also highlighted three core principles of the Lotus Sutra: the equality of all beings, which advocates eliminating prejudice; embracing diversity, which emphasises respecting individual differences to promote harmonious coexistence; and cultivating compassion to resolve conflicts and build a peaceful world.

The following day, Wang Huihui delivered another lecture titled “Chang Shuhong and Daisaku Ikeda” at the SGM Culture Centre. The lecture highlighted the profound friendship and exchanges between Chang Shuhong, often referred to as the “Guardian of Dunhuang,” and President Ikeda.

Wang Huihui described how Chang Shuhong, while living in France, was inspired to return to China upon encountering a book showcasing the exquisite paintings in the Mogao Caves. That pivotal moment ignited a lifelong dedication to preserving the cultural treasures.

As the founder of the Dunhuang Academy, Mr Chang spearheaded efforts to conduct research, restore statues, create mural replicas and organise international exhibitions to promote Dunhuang’s heritage.

She also spoke about Mr Chang’s admiration for President Ikeda’s commitment to world peace, cultural dialogue and strengthening China-Japan relations. In 1992, in recognition of President Ikeda’s support for the Dunhuang Academy, the academy named him an honorary research fellow.

The two lectures, moderated by SGM communications, culture and information division head Chia Kok Peng, were participated by some 1,500 people on the 14th and 2,000 people on the 15th, both on-site and online.
