Beacon Group Seminar: Empowering Participants on their Mission of Compassion

On 20 and 21 April, a seminar for members of the SGM Beacon Group, comprising healthcare professionals and students. Themed “Rise as True Disciples with a Pioneering Spirit towards 2030,” the seminar drew attendance by 72 participants. The event spanned two days, with the first day held at the Penang Culture Centre, and the second day at the Soka Peace Centre Malaysia (SPCM). 

Beacon Group adviser Dr Christopher Boey conducted a study based on the “A Religion of Human Revolution” subseries from President Ikeda’s lecture series, “The Buddhism of the Sun – Illuminating the World”. He emphasised the significance of transforming karma into a mission through the practice of Nichiren Buddhism.

Meanwhile, SGM General Director Koh Sia Feai stressed the importance of cherishing the dignity of life, urging all participants to embrace their roles as Bodhisattvas of the Earth.

The seminar also featured inspiring experience sharing: Chong Ler recounted her journey of overcoming language barriers and cultural differences during her studies in the UK, experiencing profound personal growth through shakubuku; Yeap Shi Tieh shared her experiences caring for critically ill patients, guided by the humanistic values emphasised in Nichiren Buddhism; and Thulasini Balachandran expressed her joy in completing her research through prayer, leading to an opportunity to present her findings at a conference.

At SPCM, participants had the opportunity to explored the Legacy Hall, gaining insight into the unwavering spirit of the pioneering members who laid the foundation during the early days of SGM’s establishment. Beacon Group leader Siow Yoon Kee encouraged everyone to strengthen their practice of Nichiren Buddhism and become beacons of hope for others.

Participants shared their profound reflections from the seminar, expressing sentiments such as “I have learned the importance of compassion and cherishing lives” and “I am even more motivated to work towards the happiness of others.”
