SGM Coorganises “Honouring the 110th Anniversary of Venerable Bo Yuan” Exhibition

The “Honouring the 110th Anniversary of Venerable Bo Yuan: An Exhibition of his Calligraphy, Paintings and Historical Documents, Featuring Masterpieces Donated by C.N. Liew” was held at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM from 2 November to 8 December 2024. The opening ceremony on 2 November was officiated by National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage rector Prof Dr Tan Awang Besar, representing Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing.

SGM General Director Koh Sia Feai, in his opening address, highlighted the exhibition’s multifaceted significance: celebrating the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations, commemorating Venerable Bo Yuan’s 110th birth anniversary and honouring the establishment of the Venerable Bo Yuan Memorial Hall at Shifeng Temple in Fujian Province, China.

Malaysia-China Friendship Association (PPMC) secretary-general Tan Keng commended Venerable Bo Yuan’s unique approach to art. He highlighted how the Venerable infused Buddhist principles into his calligraphy and paintings, creating works that embody strength and a transcendent artistic spirit.

Buddhist Association of Fu’an City (China) president Venerable Hui Zhao reflected on Venerable Bo Yuan’s remarkable 62 years of contribution in Malaysia. Born in 1914 in Fu’an, Fujian Province, Venerable Bo Yuan dedicated his entire life to the spread of Chinese culture and left a lasting impact before his passing in 2009.

Jointly organised by Soka Gakkai Malaysia and PPMC, the exhibition showcased Venerable Bo Yuan’s remarkable calligraphy and ink paintings spanning various stages of his life. Among the highlights were invaluable works by Venerable Bo Yuan, preserved by his disciple C.N. Liew and donated to the Bo Yuan Memorial Hall. Visitors had the rare opportunity to view these treasured pieces, a testament to Venerable Bo Yuan’s profound impact on Buddhism, art and cultural heritage.
