From February 26 to March 11, SGM Penang held a joint charity art exhibition at its SGM Penang Culture Centre in Bayan Lepas. This exhibition, titled “Love of Tea and Calligraphy”, officially opened on February 26 and featured the works of renowned Hong Kong calligrapher and noted Malaysian artist Richard Wong. Both artists have exhibited in WKSGM in the past.
Lam, from Hong Kong, donated over70 pieces of his own calligraphic works, and together with Richard Wong jointly donated ten pieces they co-created for the exhibition. The purpose of this exhibition is to raise funds for five schools in Penang, namely SJKC Pei Ying, SJKC Wen Khai, SJKC Chung Shan, SJKC Kg Valdor and SJKC Sin Chung.
Among the dignitaries present were Penang State Art and Museum Gallery Lee Khai, representatives from the Penang art community and representatives from the schools receiving the proceeds of the exhibition.
The opening was officiated by YB Wong Hon Wai, Air Itam assemblyman, on behalf of Penang Chief Minister YAB Lim Guan Eng. He lauded the aims of the exhibition in raising funds and promoting art and expressed hopes that SGM would continue to promote peace through culture.
Over 30 pieces of tea pots and tea-making paraphernalia from Richard Wong’s collection were also on display. Some of these items were also inscribed with his calligraphy.
On March 5, Richard Wong hosted a “Friendship through Tea” event where he also inscribed calligraphy for the audience’s viewing.
