Two consecutive days of torrential rain in Penang on November 4 and 5, 2017 caused flooding all over the state, with many residents being forced to move into evacuation centres for temporary shelter.
In response to the floods, SGM General Director Koh Sia Feai headed operations to provide disaster relief assistance to the victims. SGM Penang leaders also headed local efforts to provide disaster relief and other assistance.
Some 200 SGM Penang households were affected by the floods, with 145 of them seriously. Water levels rose to as high as 1.5 metres and some members and their families had to be evacuated to flood relief centres.
SGM disbursed RM 70,000 as aid funding, and after water levels subsided, local members and Youth Division members from Kuala Lumpur were on-hand to help with clean-up efforts, enabling the victims to return home as soon as it was possible.
Volunteers took time off to help with the clean-up efforts, and some of the flood victims even helped others clean their homes before going own to clean their own. The altruistic spirit displayed by the volunteers and victims was truly commendable and moved those present.
